Substitute Teacher/ Respite Care Provider

Starting wage range: $18.82 – $20.81

Overview

Relief Nursery provides comprehensive family support services that are easily accessible to families who are raising children birth through five years of age and who are experiencing high levels of stress. We provide early intervention that centers on building successful and resilient children and strengthening parents. Our staff work as a team to provide a unique array of support, from therapeutic classrooms and outreach programs, to parenting education, substance use disorder recovery support and more.

We are currently hiring for a Substitute Teacher/Respite Care Provider to help support this mission. In this role, you’ll assist teachers in a supportive role to carry out developmentally appropriate and therapeutic preschool activities. You’ll encourage the social, emotional, physical, and cognitive development of children and attend to their safety and wellbeing.

Responsibilities

This position may evolve over time, and we may assign tasks or responsibilities that are not listed below.

  1. Maintain a safe, nurturing, and inclusive classroom environment.
  2. Provide attentive supervision of children at all times, and respond appropriately to emergency or crisis situations.
  3. Engage with children in play, conversation, to support global development and create positive connections.
  4. Help children recognize feelings; validate emotions, support them through the process by offering positive tools as needed.
  5. Use positive, developmentally appropriate behavior guidance in accordance to Relief Nursery practices.
  6. Report and document notable behaviors, incidents, or concerns to the lead teacher or supervisor.
  7. Support children with toileting/diapering, handwashing, and mealtime.
  8. Get familiar with classroom schedule and assist with classroom organization, daily
    preparation, and cleanup (indoor/outdoor).
  9. Follow the classroom routine in a variety of settings
  10. Communicate warmly and effectively with parents during transitions.
  11. Communicate with teacher partner to plan, implement, debrief, and document the day in the classroom.
  12. Maintain confidentiality of children and families.
  13. Walk with children to the classroom or bus.
  14. Relieve teachers for breaks as needed.
  15. Work collaboratively and respectfully with other staff.
  16. Support transportation of children to or from school by riding the bus.
  17. Follow USDA and food handler guidelines for serving food to children.
  18. Follow all program policies, licensing regulations, health and safety standards, and mandatory reporting laws.
  19. Complete Relief Nursery trainings as required.
  20. Perform other relevant duties as assigned, including assisting with Food for Lane County
    (FFLC), diaper bank, etc.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Prior experience working with children ages six (6) weeks through five (5) years.
  2. Willingness to support children and families experiencing poverty, stress, and other barriers and the ability to relate sensitively and non-judgmentally with both children and parents.
  3. Knowledge of early childhood development and developmentally appropriate activities.
  4. Familiar with and ability to implement positive behavior support principles and techniques.
  5. Willingness to adhere to adult/child ratio and agency philosophies regarding curriculum and safety.
  6. Ability to supervise preschool children and ensure a safe environment.
  7. Ability respond to emergent needs of a busy classroom and outdoor play areas; this includes the physical ability to move quickly and respond to children who are very active.
  8. Demonstrated ability to work as a team member and maintain a positive, optimistic attitude and to handle high stress situations.
  9. Current Pediatric First Aid/CPR and Food Handler’s cards or willingness to obtain upon hire.

Preferred qualifications refer to job-related education or training, experience, or skills that are beneficial, but not a requirement for the position.

  1. Bilingual in English and Spanish

Physical Requirements

  1. Ability to frequently stand, walk, kneel, sit on the floor or in child-sized chairs, lift and carry children up to a certain weight (up to approximately 40 pounds), bend, reach, and sometimes run to respond to emergencies, all while maintaining a high level of alertness and physical stamina to engage with young children throughout the day; this may also include good vision and hearing for observing children’s behavior and interactions.
